What is Rubil?

Rubil lets you type with your voice. It's built for people who find typing difficult, slow, painful or tiring. Watch how it works, from your first click to everything else it can do.

How to use Rubil, 4 minutes 30 seconds. The words in the video are all on screen, and the full script is below. Music: "Odyssey" by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com), CC BY 4.0.

What Rubil does

Rubil turns what you say into clean, written text. It types right where you're typing, in the apps you already use. It cleans up fillers like "um" and "uh" and adds punctuation, without changing your words.

Rubil runs on Mac and Windows, and as an extension for Chrome.

Getting started

  1. Get Rubil at rubil.io/download.

On a Mac, allow two things when setup asks: the microphone, so Rubil can hear you, and Accessibility, so Rubil can type for you.

  2. Click where you want to type.

An email, a message, a document.

  3. Click the Rubil microphone to start.

It sits at the bottom of your screen. One click and Rubil is listening.

  4. Talk.

Pause to think whenever you like. The timer shows Rubil is listening.

  5. Click Stop when you're done.

Your words land where you were typing, cleaned up, with punctuation. The words are still yours.

Prefer the keyboard?

  • Mac: tap Right Option, or press Option and Space.
  • Windows: press Ctrl, Alt and Space.
  • Chrome: press Alt, Shift and R. On a Mac, Control, Shift and R.

Press the same keys again to stop.

Go at your own pace

  • Pause. Need a break? Pause, and the take waits for you.
  • Restart. Lost your thread? Restart and say it again from the beginning.
  • Discard. Changed your mind? Discard the take. Nothing is typed.

Every button works with one click, so you never have to start over by typing.

What else Rubil can do

Accessibility starts in the code. We build and fine-tune Rubil to handle different speech patterns, including repeated sounds and words, pauses, restarts and uneven pacing.

Keep my exact words. When you want a word-for-word record, keep the recognized words without cleanup.

One tap. Start and stop with one key, a click on the Rubil pill or a shortcut you choose.

Calm mode. Turn off sound cues when you want fewer distractions. On Mac and Windows, this also quiets notifications.

Easier to read. Make text bigger, add letter spacing or switch to a reading font that keeps similar letters apart.

Long takes. Speak for up to 15 minutes without stopping to restart. Keep your train of thought and work at your own pace. In Chrome, sign in for 15 minutes.

Retry without starting over. If a take doesn't send, Rubil holds on to it so you can try again.

Search your history. Your saved dictations stay on your computer, encrypted and searchable, so you can see what Rubil heard.

Listen back. Hear your saved dictations read aloud. Check what you said and catch mistakes without reading on screen.

Glossary. Names, product terms, acronyms and shortcuts can be added to your Glossary. Add a word once, and Rubil uses your spelling from then on. Say a shortcut, like "my address", and Rubil types the full text. Every word you don't have to fix by hand is typing you don't have to do.

Notes, which we're building

When typing is hard, keeping track of things is hard too. Start with "Rubil", then say what to keep, and it goes to Notes instead of being typed. Days later, it's still there.

You can then use what you saved. Start with "Rubil" and ask for a draft. Rubil finds what it needs in your Notes, and in apps you connect. The draft is marked Generated and says what it was based on. Nothing goes in until you press Insert.
