What's new in Rubil

Rubil formats what you said. It does not rewrite it. This month most of the work went into proving that holds, and publishing the score in the open.

• A bigger formatting model. Formatting moved to a stronger model. On the internal suite of 692 evaluations, the share of dictations needing an edit dropped sharply, with no meaningful change in speed.
• Your hedges, wording and self-corrections survive. If you said "I think maybe we should," that is what you get. If you corrected yourself mid-sentence, the cancelled version is dropped and the corrected one is kept. Numbers keep the grouping you dictated.
• The formatter cannot answer you. Dictate something that sounds like an instruction and Rubil writes it down. It does not act on it.
• The quality score is public. Post-Edit Rate is the share of dictations that need at least one edit before they are fit to send. It is measured daily and published at rubil.io/quality, including the runs where it got worse.

• It updates itself now. New builds install in the background. No going back to the site to redownload.
• Less waiting after you stop talking. Delivery got a fast path and the recording bitrate now matches the Chrome extension, so the same words travel in less data.
• The pill, panel, glossary and onboarding are on the design system. The Mac app and the Chrome extension now look like the same product, because they are.
• Hide the microphone indicator. Right-click the pill to put it away if you would rather not see it while you work.

Most of this release is the recording surface getting rebuilt on the Rubil design system, plus one insertion bug that had been quietly doubling text in AI chats.

• One less permission. The extension no longer asks for the downloads permission. It was left over from a feature that no longer exists, and an extension that hears you should ask for as little as possible.
• Onboarding is four steps, one card at a time. The old setup page dumped everything at once. It now moves one card at a time, so you get to your first dictation faster.
• A scratchpad for when there is nowhere to type. Start a dictation on a page with no text field and your words land in a scratchpad instead of disappearing.
• The waveform shows your real voice. The bars on the pill are driven by your actual microphone level. If the bars are flat, your mic is not being heard, and that is now something you can see instead of guess.
• Blocked microphone is its own state. When Chrome has blocked the mic, the pill says so and offers the fix, instead of looking like a recording that never starts.
• Glossary and settings panels rebuilt. Both surfaces now use the same type scale, spacing and colours as the rest of Rubil, and dictating into the glossary gets formatted like everywhere else.

• The first public build of the Windows app is live. It runs from the system tray so Rubil works across your native apps, not only the browser. Download it from rubil.io/windows.
• A visible toast when the mic is off. Windows gates microphone access with one global toggle for all desktop apps. If it's off, Rubil now shows a toast that names the toggle and opens Windows' privacy settings on click, instead of silently failing to hear you.
• Updates itself in the background. No manual redownload. The app checks for new builds and installs them automatically.

• The first public build of the Mac app is live. It runs from your menu bar so Rubil works across your native apps, not only the browser. Download it from rubil.io.
• New app icon. A 3D toucan now sits in your menu bar, because the old one was not pulling its weight.

I rebuilt the recording experience around one idea: you should never have to think about where the controls are.

• One mic, one pill. Click the mic and it turns into a recording pill right where you're working. When you finish, it collapses back to the mic. No floating window, no second surface to keep track of.
• Your session follows you. Switch tabs or even windows in the middle of a dictation and the pill comes with you, so you pick up exactly where you left off.
• A quick menu on the mic. Right-click it to reach Settings, your Glossary, History, and Account without leaving the page.
• Cleaner copy to clipboard. A compact result popup replaced the old widget, so grabbing your text is a single click.
