# Rubil: full site content > Type with your voice. Built for people who find typing difficult. Rubil is accessibility-first voice dictation software for Mac, Windows and Chrome. Press a shortcut and speak. Rubil types your words where you were typing. It takes out the ums and restarts, adds punctuation and formatting, and is designed to keep your words and meaning. If Rubil can't paste, your text waits in Rubil. Last updated October 12, 2026. ## What Rubil does - **Dictation.** Press a shortcut and speak. Rubil types your words where you were typing. On Mac, tap Right Option or press Option+Space to start and stop. - **Cleanup that keeps your words.** Rubil removes fillers and restarts and adds punctuation and formatting. It's designed to keep your words and meaning, not rewrite what you said. - **If Rubil can't paste, your text waits in Rubil.** - **Glossary.** Add a word once, like a name or a product, and Rubil uses your spelling. - **Shortcuts.** Make a shortcut for things you type often. - **You decide when to send.** Rubil types your words. It never sends anything for you. - **No screen reading.** Rubil doesn't read what's on your screen. It checks which app you're in so it can format for it. - Rubil needs an internet connection to turn speech into text. ## Who it is for Rubil is built for people who find typing painful, tiring, difficult or slow, with or without a diagnosis. You don't need a diagnosis to use it, and Rubil never asks about your health. The groups below are possible uses, sorted by the difficulty someone has with typing. Not everyone with these conditions finds typing hard, and not everyone who does will find Rubil useful. Naming a condition doesn't mean Rubil has been tested or proven for it. - **Typing hurts or is physically hard.** Pressing keys causes pain or strain, or the hands and arms don't move the way typing needs. This can come with repetitive strain injury (RSI), carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, arthritis, chronic pain, hand injuries, or limited hand or arm movement, including using a computer one-handed. Speaking lets you write without pressing as many keys. - **Getting words typed is slow or overwhelming.** The thinking is there, but turning it into typed text takes a long time or breaks your train of thought. This can come with ADHD, dyslexia or dysgraphia, for some people. Speaking lets you get the words out first. Rubil adds punctuation and is designed to keep your words and meaning. People who stutter: Rubil removes repeated sounds and words, and pauses don't end the take. We haven't run a supervised trial with people who stutter yet. ## What we have not tested - Speech affected by dysarthria, for example from Parkinson's, cerebral palsy, ALS or a stroke. We make no claim. - Screen readers, including VoiceOver. Rubil hasn't been tested with screen readers yet. - Voice Control on Mac doesn't work well with Rubil today, because its key presses don't reach Rubil. - Rubil has not had a formal WCAG audit, and there is no VPAT. - Rubil is a typing tool. It doesn't diagnose or treat anything. We haven't finished checking it app by app. If Rubil can't paste, your text waits in Rubil so you can paste it yourself. **How do I start and stop on Mac?** Tap Right Option, or press Option+Space. Do the same to stop. **Which computers does it run on?** Mac and Windows as desktop apps, and Chrome as an extension. One account covers all three. Voice Control's key presses don't reach Rubil. **Does Rubil work if I stutter?** Rubil removes repeated sounds and words, and pauses don't end the take. We haven't run a supervised trial with people who stutter yet. **Does Rubil work if my speech is affected?** We haven't tested it with dysarthric speech, so we don't claim it works. Research on the kind of speech recognition Rubil uses, not on Rubil itself, shows many more errors with those speech patterns.
